Yet Another Excellent Ficus
Posted by adminWhenever people ask me about indoor bonsai that are well suited to beginners, I mention Baby Jades, Shefflera and always, I mention Ficus. Ficus are without question the most ubiquitous of indoor plants and there is a reason. Not only does the Genus Ficus include many plants that are remarkably different in appearance, for instance both the Rubber tree and the Benjamina are members, it also includes tropical and subtropical plants that are easy to care for. For the purpose of bonsai, many plants in the genus ficus display many desirable characteristics. These include smaller leaves, interesting bark and branch structure and a tolerance for pinching, pruning and root pruning. A favorite is the Willow Leafed Fig, more correctly referred to as Ficus Nerifolia.
This bonsai tree is another terrific example of why everyone should love the Fig Family. It has elongated leaves that give it a distinctly exotic look and smooth grey bark. The tree that I’ve linked to has been grown in a root-over-rock style which is very popular among bonsai enthusiasts. Ficus bonsai will forgive the odd missed watering- but don’t make a habit of it or your tree will not thrive and while the Nerifolia is not the very easiest to care for, it will still make an outstanding choice if you’re looking for a wedding or housewarming gift.
